Every year, my family draw names for our Christmas gift exchange. One of my aunts wrote "gift of time" on her list - number three to be precise. It made me believe that she was joking and pointing that out to my uncle, her husband, but it made me ponder on how do you truly give someone a gift of time. I didn't draw her name (fortunately) but if I did, how would I really give it? I could give her a spa treatment package, send her off somewhere for a short vacation, make her attend a silent retreat or any retreat (btw, I can't really afford the vacation package) but I think she's thinking somewhere close to this list: time to do laundry, time to act or be lazy, time to attend a weekday mass, time to play that instrument, time to do nothing, time to watch a movie or a tv show, time to take time..gosh, this list could go on!
An analyzer-controller would think of the most easiest solution to this is to "un-commit" his or her self from engagements. But we can't just drop everything! I guess we all have been tempted to do it but in reality, we have to face these commitments head on. So this year, maybe I'll commit to less projects or stop saying yes if my calendar gets full. I have a bad habit of saying yes most of the time because I don't want to miss a thing with my friends or BLD activities. This 2008, I pray for a well-balanced calendar for us all. :) I pray for that inner peace to reign throughout the year and many years to come. This peace could signify and be perceived into your own definition of "gift of time." I’m defining it something like organized but relaxed. Others could define it as time for healing, time to approach someone for forgiveness, time to return to Him, or just simply time to run errands and play catch up.
Where do we all start? One thing comes to mind - think of Jesus going up to the mountain to pray. He didn’t need to understand this gift of time because back then, I’m sure there weren’t such thing as penciling into one’s calendar. He spent the whole night praying (Luke 6:12). So let’s all identify our mountain and meet Him there regularly. Then your gift of time, maybe will start to unfold. God bless.
